Introduction

Hess's Law states that the enthalpy change of a chemical reaction is the same regardless of the number of steps taken to get from reactants to products. This calculator helps you calculate the enthalpy change of a target reaction using known reactions.

Formally, Hess's Law can be stated as:

ΔHtotal = ΣΔHproducts - ΣΔHreactants

Where:

  • ΔHtotal is the total enthalpy change of the target reaction
  • ΔHproducts is the sum of the enthalpies of the products in the known reactions
  • ΔHreactants is the sum of the enthalpies of the reactants in the known reactions
